Attention parents of girls!

Attention! Attention parents of girls! I received some valuable information today that you all need to know!

Is your daughter active?

Does your daughter prefer blue, green, yellow or red to pink?

I've got news for you! She is a lesbian!!

I was informed by another parent at our class today that because Quinn is an active little girl AND because she does not gravitate towards pink things, she is going to be a lesbian. I'm so grateful to this stranger for the insight into my 22-month old daughter's sexuality.

This comment came after she told me to pierce Teagan's ears so she wouldn't be mistaken as a boy and after a comment about Teagan being FATTER than her twin sister.

I told her that I could care less if strangers mistake my daugher for a boy and that it happens regardless of what she is wearing (she has been called a boy in a bright pink jacket). With regards to Quinn being a lesbian, I sarcastically told her that I didn't realize that such criteria existed and that I was confused because their other mother loves pink.

  1. First of all, OMG. Seriously??? I can't believe someone would think something like that, let alone say it out loud! Secondly, did you really say that stuff back to her?! You are awesome. I would have been too shocked. LOL.

And this person is a parent? Scary.

    1. Oh yes. Her daughter was the same age as the girls.

Honestly, I found the comments to be so ridiculous that they were actually kind of funny, so I didn't have an issue responding the way I did ;)

Also, I wish I could have seen her face when you responded to her.

    1. Allison, it is all your fault. I didn't think about the city classes until you suggested them ;)

ps. You better keep a close eye on your little lady's colour preferences!

  3. WOW!!!! That is unbelievable! Maybe it is because I am a, ya know, lesbian, but I can easily tell that T is a girl, earrings or not. As for Q...well, I think stereotypes like this are based in sheer ignorance (as I am sure you know) but completely out of line nonetheless. My wife is super femme and, well, she IS my wife ;)

PS-The nursery art work is from the Babies.R.Us owl nursery series. We love it!

    1. I am a lot like your wife. Upon first glance, I don't "look" gay. I'm outing myself again and again these days because I'm often asked about "daddy"! Usually people don't even bat an eyelash when they find out that we are a 2 mother home (common for Toronto!).

    1. Straight people can be so stupid? As the mother of two young girls who happens to be married to their father I would have been just as offended if I had been subjected to such a ridiculous conversation in reference to my daughters, or anyone's daughters or sons for that matter. While I realize this isn't always the case I like to believe that we all want the same thing for our children, that they'll grow up in a world where they can love and be loved and to know that from there anything is possible, right? Anyway, this woman was clearly stupid and ignorant but I doubt it had anything to do with the fact that she was probably heterosexual too.

    2. I doubt it had anything to do with whether or not she was straight and everything to do with the fact that she was just stupid and ignorant.

  10. The weird conflation of gender and sexuality is enough, but them to suggest one of your daughters is fat?! She is a child!! Wow...just wow...some people.
Nice response, by the way :)

  11. Seriously?! This mom sounds like a wack job. Scary to think that she's raising her own young and impressionable little girl. I'm living proof that stereotypes mean absolutely nothing. I was that girly girl in the foo, foo dresses, HS cheerleader and eventually a college sorority girl. I don't think anyone thought I played for "the other team". People are just painfully ignorant sometimes...
